People's marketplace

The shopkeepers and clerks of "Machiguaa" are mainly middle-aged, women of great good cheer who like to chat and banter with their customers. The further into the street you go the more maze-like it becomes. Step into any shop and you will find it chock-a-block with merchandise. In such a relaxed and good-natured atmosphere you can't help but feel at home. At the Makishi Public Market in Heiwa street you'll find many kinds of colorful fish from the South Seas along with local Okinawan vegetables, and also somewhat grotesque items like coils of "irabu" (dried sea snake), and pig's head, feet and innards. The Machigwaa is the people's kitchen, as the saying goes, and very popular with shoppers.
